Art books have been a great resource and inspiration to me over the years, allowing me to study some of the great painters of the past. As I’ve mentioned in previous blogs, the best art books are those that contain beautiful color images. I’ve often been able to gain a great deal by studying these images, value by value, edge by edge, just as I would if I were standing in front of an original painting at a museum. I will often use a magnifying glass as well in order to see more detail in a good reproduction. I cannot over emphasize the value of a great art book. It’s one investment that will pay off for many years to come. There are some books that immediately catch my attention because of the subject, the size of the book, number of color plates, and the publisher. I recently came across one of these books and wanted to share this information with others who might be interested as well.

The title of the book is Nicolai Fechin: The Art and the Life by Galina Tuluzakova, the foremost expert on Nicolai Fechin and his work. I had to do a double take when I first read the book’s description: 462 pages with 427 color plates of Fechin’s work! What makes this even more incredible is that the book is in English. There are several Chinese and Russian publications on Fechin’s work, but to find one of this size, written in English, is rare. The book is published by Fechin Art Reproductions and looks to be the ultimate book on Nicolai Fechin and his work.

The release date is set for Summer 2012 and the price is $125. If similar books on the work of Joaquin Sorolla or Givoanni Boldini are any indicator, I have a feeling that this price is going to be higher in the coming years. As an example, I bought a book on the work of Joaquin Sorolla back in 2001 for around $125 and the book now sells for upwards of $650 or more, making it impossible for most artists to own. It’s by far the best book that I’ve ever seen on Sorolla’s work and one that I have studied from countless times over the years.

I certainly can’t predict the future, but I have a feeling that this new Fechin book is going to be one worth checking out.

Here are some examples of Nicolai Fechin’s work.
