I had the opportunity to study under Hall of Fame illustrator and world renowned portrait painter, Joe Bowler, for 23 years. His passion for art, studying the great painters of the past, love for great art books and a desire to always strive for excellence continues to inspire me today.

I’m passionate about art and was looking for a platform where I could share what I’ve learned as a commissioned portrait painter, along with the priceless advice and experience that Joe Bowler so generously shared with me. He would often say that there are no secrets in art. All of the information that an artist needs to learn in order to draw and paint is available somewhere, whether it’s in an academic setting, museum, online, in books or in person. The information is out there, but gaining access to it is not always ideal. Because of this, I wanted to provide an easily affordable and accessible way for artists to learn and to be inspired. This is where Patreon comes in. The idea is to share visual information in ways that I’ve found to be most effective when studying art. Through painting demonstration videos and tutorials, visual art blogs, step-by-step progression photos and live Q&A sessions, artists can have access to educational resources that resonate with visual learners while focusing on the core principles of representational art (Drawing, Value, Color and Edges). In addition, I’ll be sharing other things that are creatively inspiring to me as well, such as works of art from some of my favorite painters, close-up photos from museum exhibitions and some of my favorite art book recommendations.

This is an instructional art course which focuses on teaching the foundational principles of representational art by demonstrating how each one can be applied directly to the art of painting. By learning the principles that go into the decision making process, an artist is then equipped to face any challenge in painting, regardless of subject matter.

 

 

In addition, members will also have access to my Painting Outdoor Light video which demonstrates how to use all four principles of Drawing, Value, Color and Edges together while painting a head study from start to finish. This video places an emphasis on how to paint the effects of outdoor light and also includes bonus footage which discusses the differences between indoor and outdoor light, value relationships and using warm and cool temperature changes. A palette demonstration of how to mix flesh tones is also included in this additional material.
